We seem to be at a flashpoint, or a moment of considerable challenge for organizations when it comes to driving change–what do you think is behind that?
Well, once we were doing organizational change in a relatively benign and predictable external environment. We knew what to change and how to change–and that was difficult enough! Now, with the combined stressors of the pandemic, social unrest, and the climate crisis, what is hard to do in ‘normal’ times has become impossible.
Organizational change becomes complicated as it occurs in the context of organizations trying to make sense of how they respond to social change. The social fabric of organizations has ruptured with leaders, employees, and team members not knowing how to approach each other on matters of political and social injustice. People are hesitating for fear of saying the wrong thing. Additionally, the pandemic has left us exhausted. Who has the energy to change?
